The USA is home to several of the world’s most exciting cities, some truly mind-blowing landscapes, a strong sense of regionalism, a trenchant mythology, more history than the country gives itself credit for and, arguably, some of the most approachable natives in the world.
Every traveler in the United States – be they foreigners on a coast-to-coast road trip or locals exploring their extraordinarily diverse land – has some idea of what to expect. American culture has become so thoroughly shared throughout the globe that one of the principal joys of getting to know the country is the repeated, delicious shock of the familiar. Yellow taxis on busy city streets; roadside mailboxes straight out of Peanuts cartoons; wooden porches overlooking the cottonfields; tumbleweed skittering across the desert; endless highways dotted with pick-up trucks and chrome-plated diners; the first sight of the Grand Canyon, or the Manhattan skyline – now more than ever an indelibly iconic image. |

MIAMI is a sparkler of a city. Built almost from scratch in the 1920s and ’30s, Miami has grown and diversified: The influx of Cubans in the 1950s and then Haitians, Israelis, Europeans, Asians and other Latin Americans in the 1980s and ’90s has transformed Miami into one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world. Expect a mix of clothing styles, partly because of the weather, partly because of a prevailing casual atmosphere. It ranges from power suits in the immediate downtown area to stylish yet casual dress in all other parts of town. Winter visitors should be prepared for cold snaps with near-freezing temperatures. All year long, the intense ultraviolet rays of the sun demand the use of a sun screen or sunblock and protective clothing. Take precautions even on cloudy days.
